That's a question I'd love to answer if I had a loop. Probably ought to get one but I always figured theproof is in the pudding with these sorts of things or in this case in the shaving

I'll have to get a loop. I've been thinking about getting one for a while. I'll do something more scientificamal after I get one and report back. Meanwhile I think I'll keep playing around with it.

    Just my 2¢...
Been through a bunch of different ones and
    I highly recommend a Belomo10x loupe.

If you've ever seen Pete's glasses, you'd know why he only needs a 10X loupe.

If you need anything more than a Belomo 10x to clearly see the edge of a razor then you are the one that's pretty much BLIND!!

No lie, there. Blind in one eye, can't see out the other.

One thing that should always be noted

An experienced hand can shave with a MUCH less refined edge than a beginner, there are a few threads on here that outline a 1k shave test and some from way back that describe a 4k shave test, Most people are rather surprised at how well a properly set 1k bevel feels like..

It isn't really a matter of "Will it work" but more about what you are looking for in the shave.

Most of us that started Pre-Internet with a SR used one stone to maintain our razors for many years, and didn't even know what grit it was

That's a very good point. What did people use before there even were jewelers loupes? People have been shaving for a long time before they even existed. Honestly I look for the shine on the edge when turned against the light.
Again, I know it's still not very scientificamated but I tried the granite table top again today on one of my imperial extra hollow grounds. Same deal: plain water for 60 laps this time and then took it to the leather. That blade was a sharp as any I have ever used. I have a 12k sharpton and quite honestly I seldom ever use it because I don't think it really improves over the 4K/8K pyramid. With some blades it does and with others it doesn't... I don't know, but that granite top table really does improve the edge anecdotally at least. Call it snake oil if you want but I guess perception is 90% of reality right?

An additional thought here about perception and reality. Isn't that what this whole thing is about? How we perceive our shaving experience? Obviously it is about the reality of it too but what are we participating in a forum for if we don't value our perception of it at least to a substantial degree? Does the granite improve it? It sure seems to to me. How concerned am I about the nuts and bolts of it...well I guess that boils down to perception also doesn't it? Just food for thought...or maybe it's food for perception...hmmm
