Put the slab on the floor or find a smooth piece of cement floor. Get a steel cookie sheet, thrift store, dollar store or restaurant supply for a large one. The cookie sheet is flat and will stay flat, will contain the mess and save your granite plate. Clean up is a snap when changing grits, hose it on to your lawn.

You can use your body weight to grind the stone, much easier on the arms and back. Get the lowest grit Silicone Carbide you can find, I use 60, but just got some 36 grit, have not tried it yet.

Grid your Ark with a sharpie, (Red or Green for black stone) pencil will wash off with slurry. Once flat the grits go fast.

    Nice stones, enjoy.

Surgical Black and Translucent. I have the boxes, they are oldschool smiths maybe, i need to check..

Marty i remember your baking tray method ,it sounds excellent but i didn't haul that slab to my house for nothing. This type of granite doesn't wear much, i have spent hours on it and it still has the sheen to it. It laughs at SIC powder..

Something i have learnt is to not bare down on the hone too much because you can end up with uneven wear . Slight, even pressure, every movement must be mirrored and then repeated with the opposite hand. That is the best way to grind evenly..

I made the mistake of carrying the sab to the kitchen sink ,surrounded in tea towels, to wash i off each grit. Everything i own is now lapped so i will steer clear of it for now.. Enough respect and a shout out to the ancient Egyptians for dealing with massive pieces of granite

Especially so, because the ones that did the heavy lifting were all slaves.
