The kind of work he did and what he sharpened may give you a clue.

Lap them and compare the stria to known synthetic grits, Wet & Dry or stones.

He was a jack of all trades and a hunter and fisherman so he could have been sharpening anything. The number 2 stone I don't think is slate but rather a synthetic it don't show in the picture but it has no veins and drinks water like a city boy in the desert.

The number 1 looks like an ax hone to me. My grandmother had one similar. Hers at least was good for tools like hoes , grub hoes and axes but I wouldn't even sharpen a knife on it. Yours may not be that but that's what it looks like to me.

From another box looks like maybe a soft ark. your thoughts? Don't mind the knife it was in the same box
