I have a small but very varied razor collection ........ There are French, English ,Spanish, Japanese, and German razors. The majority are old but I do have a modern Dovo .
As time passes and my honing skills are getting better ( I am not pretending to be a "hone mister") I have come to the conclusion that a great razor depends on the following factors : 75% on the honing and 25% on the actual razor .
The older razors are better than the newer ones but the underlining factor is how it is honed. Honing also takes into account the geometry of the razor .
