Thanked: 0Leveling shapton Glass series
Hey all , I'm new to straight razors and shaptan GS 1000 and 4000 are my first quality stones. Is it okay to level the four thousand with the 1,000? Seems to take the pencil marks off fairly quickly and not leave scratches that catch swaif like 400 lapping film on glass against the 4000. Would it be reasonable to level my cheap 1,000 with lapping film then use that to level the Shapton 1000?
Thanks!
Matt

I have no experience with the glass stones but welcome.
Most of us use either a diamond plate or a flat tile or a baking sheet on a flat surface with either silicon carbide (SIC) powder or wet dry sandpaper. When using another stone, which by the way I never do, you would generally use one of lower grit as your flattener. If you are going to flatten the cheap 1k why not just flatten the better one with your lapping film? No reason to add, wear and tear to your film not to mention work that is now doubled.
Again, welcome and enjoy your time here with is. There are lots of good guys here that are extremely knowledgeable and willing to help.Iron by iron is sharpened, And a man sharpens the face of his friend. PR 27:17

Thanked: 49You can use w/d sandpaper on a flat surface to level the gs series no problem.
400 grit would be fine enough and fast enough.

I use a 400 diamond plate for all my lapping. No mater what the grit of stone is.
It's just Sharpening, right?

Thanked: 13245Unfortunately the GS Series is easily imbedded with grit, so your best option is a diamond plate..
Fortunately these are no longer near as expensive as they used to be, I have tested a few of the low priced 400/1000 and they work.
A DMT 325 or D8C is an great option
Just make sure what ever plate you buy you break it in and knock off the high diamonds first"No amount of money spent on a Stone can ever replace the value of the time it takes learning to use it properly"

So I have a question - Are these stones truly made from glass or is that just some kind of marketing ploy? I'm really curious!!!

Thanked: 0Hay all
Thanks for the guidance! I'm thinking dmt 325flat but found a task lapping plate 180/600 for 90 . I was thinking it Might be nice for tool sharping as well. It is the DWSC
P8FX some cutouts.
Thoughts?
