    just picked up a brown swaty for final polishing... should i be using it wet or dry?

    You can use your Swaty either way. I treated mine with Baby oil.

    I use mine dry, or with lather, sometimes plain water depending on the razor most of my razors respond best dry. I would avoid oil as once oiled it is almost impossible to ever remove all the oil, making water unusable.

    Many years ago when barbers used these razors to shave the face and the back of the neck they would touch up there razors with the stone dry. Now if they had to completely re-hone i don't know if they used them wet or dry but was told they used a really wet lather. Now this was back in the late 50's and 60's.

    I have to ask my father what he did. He was a barber back in the 60's and I remember him having the stuff around when I was young. He's a practical farmer still, and will probably think I'm crazy for shaving with a SE, though

    You use most of the barber hones successfuly with lather. A very few are dry hones.
