Thanked: 124I was running some basic numbers based on that tutorial. I don't think I have any arithmetic errors, but you never know.
Suppose we make a pocket barber hone using half abrasive and half epoxy as a binder, as the author of that tutorial recommends. (This avoids the hassle of firing ceramic materials). Is this economically feasible?
advancedmaterials.us sells 150nm Al2O3 (alumina). I'm sure there are many others, and we probably want larger particles, like 0.75um, but let's go with it for now. In large quantities (like 10Kg), their powder comes out to about $0.05/g.
Suppose our hone is 10cm X 5cm C 1.5cm. Volume = 75cc. Half of this volume will be alumina, so let's say we need 40cc for a hone (leave room for some waste). Advanced Materials says its powder weighs about 4g/cc, so we need 160g of alumina for a hone. That means each hone would have $8 worth of alumina. Let's say for grins that it has another $5 worth of epoxy. That's $13 of material for a hone. (Incidentally, one order would give enough alumina for about 60 hones). Typical products sell at 5X materials cost, so a hone would set you back $65. Not too shabby.
I dunno, this is starting to look feasible. IDK if it would set the world on fire since you can buy a pocket-sized coticule for about this much. But it's not totally absurd.

Thanked: 150That's a good price for that grit range.
I wonder if you could get diamond powders in large enough volumes to make hones. That'd be a neat product.
