Thread: Dragons Tongue Hone anyone?

Thanks for the advice gents, mine was flat (for a piece of slate!) but compared to my coticule nowhere near as smooth.

The coticule also needs lapping before I get into home honing, so looks like I'll be building those forearms up!!

BTW can I lap the Dragon's Tongue on sandpaper, or do I need a DMT to do that? Its seems fairly hard.

I did mine on 300,600 then 1200 grit sandpaper.
Like glass after!

dk: No reason why you could not use sandpaper. Going to lap my second one on sandpaper. As already said, when it is lapped, it should be VERY smooth and stick to the sandpaper with suction.

Thanks for all the advice gents, finally got some 300, 600 & 1200 sandpaper, and all my hones are silky smooth now.
As nice as the coticule is, it feels good to use some homegrown rock!

Only problem is I now have no excuse for not using them.......

Sorry to revive this old thread, but I'm curious, how are these stones working? Are they good finishers or bevel setters or what?

Hi, I have to admit I haven't used it much. I have found Belgian stones and Cro2 all I need really.
I did have a little go with the DT a while ago and it did not damage a sharp edge.

JimR: Well it's certainly not a bevel setter, far to fine and hard for that.

Personally, I use it after the 8K side of a Norton. Seems to give the edge a much smoother feel. However, I don't have a coticule or a 12K, so I can't compair it against them. For me it goes: Norton, DT, Cro2. Which gives me a very nice finish.

This is my first post, so let me first let all of you know a little about myself. I have been reading this forum for a long time and have been a member for a while now. I dont normaly do much typing because my illness makes it hard for me to do it. I have Multiple Sclerosis and I went from working 12 hours a day shifts to a wheelchair in less then a three months period of time. The MS has caused me to be in a wheelchair full time and totaly disabled. I spent alot of time trying to learn how to hone by reading all the information here at SRP. My wife was trying to find something for me to do to keep my mind in a positive state so when she seen how much I enjoyed straight razors and the challenge of the honing,stropping,and the shave itself she has been 100% behind this hobby. I was having a terrible time with honing because my MS has damaged my nerves so badly that I have lost almost all of my sensations. So I cant feel anything when I do the TNT or the TPT and this was making things very hard for me. I finally one day as I was about to accept defeat and just forget about honing I sent Lynn a message and he asked me to call him. I have a hard time with giving up on things so I called Lynn. He helped me to learn to hone my razors without using any other tests then just to shave. I still have feelings in my face so this works good for me. Now that I have that out of the way, I have one of these Dragons Tongue hones and love it. I was shaving off of the 8k norton with no irritation at all and going against the grain with no problems. Then I got a BBW/Coticule combination stone and was going from the Norton 4k/8k to the combo stone and shaving off the coticule. Much nicer shave off the coticule. Then I added the Chinese 12k and was going from the coticule to the C12k and that was a bit smoother and closer shave then the coticule. Now for the DT hone, I dont use the C12k anymore I go from the coticule to the DT hone and for me it is a perfect shave. The blade glides over my skin much easier and smoother then with the other stones I have used so far to finish with. I dont use any pasts and I have honed about 15 razors with the DT as the finisher and each has been such a great shave for me.
Sorry for the length of this post, but I had a burst of energy this morning so I put it to good use and finaly made a contribution to this great forum.
