    Default Hone identification guesses

Well, after seeing JoeD's fine stones at our get-together last weekend, I decided to pick up some natural stones to keep my Shaptons company. I saw this on ebay, and after dithering and dathering and trying to enlarge the pic, I finally pulled the trigger so I could get other work done. So they're on the way.

So my question for you all is, whaddya think they are? I'll let you know -- or ask better questions with better pictures -- once they arrive.

The one on the top left in the box is a Pike Strop Hone -- I've seen one before; it's got a piece of strop leather on a metal plate that slides onto a barber hone. The others? The fourth one in from the right on the bottom looks intriguing... and a few just look like rocks from my yard.

    Guess away!

Funny that Joe's coticule has you wanting a natural, because I have a feeling he would love to have some of your Shaptons...

The third one in from the right caught my eye... I've heard tell that many barbers loved narrow coticules.

Default Finally came in the mail

Well, the stones came in the mail...

    Here's what some lapping revealed

Here's some close ups of the top stone, which is pretty clearly a coticule:

    Bottom:

Here's the smaller, light green stone. I'm sure you can guess what I'm hoping it is... but I need some verification from those more in the know:

The stone is all one color -- that's just a shadow. Lapping it revealed a sea-foam green slurry. Here's a close up:

So what is it? Did I get insanely lucky??

Here's a shot of the like-new Pike Strop Hone. The black part is really smooth leather, and is on a metal frame which clips onto the stone. Kind of a cool one-piece unit.

There were also a couple of carbunundrums (sp?), another ceramic hone, and what looked to me like a river stone (rounded everywhere). Something I have *no* idea of its identity is this black 'stone,' which is pretty clearly made of rubber.

I have no idea whatsoever what it is. The liquid on it is just water from washing. I didn't lap it, since I don't think it's a stone...

So, how did I do? And is the small green stone (gasp) a light green thuringian???
