Droescher's Blue Beard Razor Hone
Does anyone know anything about this SRD barber hone--performance, quality, grit rating, etc?
I have the same one on the way, and I was wondering what to expect.
The dimensions are 5.75 x 2.5. (I'm not sure about the material.)
Thanx,
Christopher

I just purchased a Blue Beard Razor Hone, or at least I will have to assume that it is, (mine does not have "SRD" engraved in it).
This is my first hone and I was wondering what you thought about yours, and if you have any tips on what works best for it, again, assuming that I have the original hone.

That is what is known as a barber hone and they were used to touch up a sharp razor that was beginning to fall off a little. I play around with various barber hones that I have by just seeing if I can get a razor that I'm shaving with a bit keener than it was the last time around. You have to experiment with it and see how it works for you. BTW, I use mine dry usually but some guys use water of lather on theirs.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

It says I can use Oil, Water, Soap, or Dry. I purchased a cheap no name razor to practice with it, until I get my technique down. I'll be using it dry then with water, when I start playing around with soap then oil how do go about cleaning it to switch form one to the other.

Thanks Jimmy,
I have one last question, I promise.
What is the best way to make sure this thing is nice and flat?
It say's use a pumice stone, but I think I read on the wiki that sandpaper taped to glass was a good way to do it also.
If sandpaper is better, what grit should I use?
That's two questions.

ChrisL is real good with flattening barber hones and so is Randydance... among others.
I've used a 325 diamond plate and called it good. I think that Chris and Randy would start with around 300 grit paper and go on up to maybe 600 and then 1,000. I know that holli4pirating finishes his by rubbing it with a Chinese 12k or whatever it really is .... after it is already flat. At least I think I know that.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I know I'm reviving an old post, but, I figured it was appropriately titled, so my question should stay under the topic rather than re-creating the wheel.
What's the consensus or approximation of the Blue Beard's grit value?

Siguy
