Lapping a pike swaty
Has anyone had experience lapping a pike swaty? How should I go about doing this? Sand paper? DMT d8c? Or another method?
Was just wondering if this would require a ton of sandpaper to do.
Thanks!

I've not lapped a Pike Swaty but I've lapped a couple of the Austrian Swatys and they are tough hones. I used a D8C on them and it took a long time and alot of effort. Thanks to Chris L and Utopian I also lapped one with a D8XX and it went through it like Grant took Richmond.

Actually I lapped a Pike brand Swaty within the last two weeks. I've had it for some time and planned on lapping and selling it. It's coarser to the touch than a Swaty 3 line Swaty and took less time to lap. After lapping I found that it had an almost imperceptible hairline crack. Therefore I will not be selling it since I don't want to pass it off on an unsuspecting buyer and I'll just use it like a Nagura stone on my stones up to 4k to refresh them during lapping.
I used diamond plates starting with the D8XX and D8C up to the D8F.
Jimmy, glad to hear you like the D8XX. It is more aggressive than a pack of chained pitbulls, but once you lap a fair number of barber hones and Chinese 12ks, you'll see even that D8XX calm down quite a bit.

Thanked: 3795Yeah my XX has calmed down quite a bit too.
It's not cutting the way it did when it was new and is taking longer to go through the harder barber hones. I think when you wear out a DMT8XX, it's time to admit you might have too many barber hones.
Also, I second what Chris said about the Pike Swaty being coarser and softer than the real Swatys. They still work fine, but they are not the same quality.Last edited by Utopian; 05-01-2009 at 06:41 PM.

+1 What Sham said about doing it under running water. Here is the thread that got me started.

Thanked: 74I got my first barbers hone last night. I started lapping with 320, then 400, 600, and finally 1500.
Was wondering how high in grit I should go?

Thanked: 3795I think you could have stopped at 600. Silky smooth hones are pretty but I don't see any need to go higher. Microscopic scratches in the hone don't affect its performance.

I myself lapped a pike last week
only used norton 320 wet dry . Used 2 sheets and took 2 hours
then finished it with norton 600 w/d ,and that was just one side .
But I am pleased with the results . But im sure a stone on stone lapping
would save alot of time

I also lap Swatys, and all hard hones, on a D8XX followed by a D8C. I usually stop at the D8C; unless testing.
