Thread: Yellow Lake oilstone

I have been offered a Yellow Lake oilstone. Its vendor claims it was used a lot in the UK for honing razors.

Has anyone more info on these stones?

They were mentioned in this thread http://straightrazorpalace.com/basic...ral-stone.html Unfortunately, no one seemed to have any experience with them. Alas, this is yet one more type of hone I haven't been able to find in my many trips to antique shops the length and breadth of the UK

Even to the naked eye it looks coarse, but

Rumor has it that Kees did buy the stone and found it superior to any J-nat, Escher, coticule or synthetic known to man.... he has since bought all of the Yellow Lake stones known to exist in the civilized world cornering the market .... at least that is what I heard from a reliable source.

I got it but never tested it. My ADs made me get so many razors and hones but time is limited. I will get round to it one day and report.

I did a double-take on the picture. Looks exactly like my Dragon's Tongue, right down to the small details.

I'll get mine lapped, take some pictures and begin testing its finishing capabilities, this weekend.
I thought i would initially test to see how it finishes/compares following my coti as well as after my 8K shapton, to get a feel for it...and of course do the crucial shave...
Suggestions from you guys would be most welcome...maybe progress backwards, from the charnley and eshcer, to the Yellow Lake to test for edge degradation?

I use lots of different methods to test hones, depending on where I expect them to fit into a progression. You could take a know shave ready razor, give it 10-15 passes, check to see what the bevel looks like and see how the razor shaves then. That may tell you roughly where it fits in, based on the scratches and their depth and how it changes the shave. Maybe even shave half your face, then go to the hone, and then do the other side of your face.

Aside from something like that, I usually do direct comparisons against hones I already have, like when I did my DT vs BBW test.
