Thanked: 171Sham, how are the turkey oil stones you have working out for honing razors? Are they finishers? If so, how do they compare to your better finishers like your brown escher, nakayamas, etc.

i am in early stage to test them. So far i would say i wouldn't put them in same level with Nakayama or escher.
they will cut faster a lot faster and drink darn oil alot.

The surface mottling of that stone is quite distinctive. I'm going to look through my collection as it looks familiar. I was reading a book recently that said they used oil on the hones as it made them harder.

Indeed. I really look forward to seeing the stuff Sham digs up, and the pics.
Anybody have any idea why these are called "Turkey" stones? Is it named after the bird, or the country? I'm guessing the country, since I don't believe turkeys exist outside the US. If the country, are they similar to some native stone of Turkey, or do they actually originate there?

Thanked: 84We have Turkey for Christmas dinner in the UK. We used to eat goose, but adopted the Turkey in recent history.
I'm pretty sure the stones were got from Turkey.
