On further inspection I think that the Kosjer one is a natural combination too. BUT, there has also been a peice of slate glued to the BBW side of the natural combo.

If you look closely along the edge, you can see a fine/thin amount of coticule yellow mixed halfway into the bottom blue portion. Just next to that there is a line that I think inidcates the glue line. An interesting way of doing things to say the least.

I decided to lap the bottom of the vintage and see what exactly it is.

It is BBW. Not slate. There was/is a layer of something painted on the sides and base of the hone (kind of wax like) that I lapped off. There was a residue in the water as I was lapping the bottom of the hone.

I didn't lap the sides as that would remove the stamps but, the line I thought I saw was/is just that, a line where a very thin amount of coticule has intruded into the blue section of rock. I guess that that is understandable, as these La Petite hones come from very thin layers of coticule that are almost never seperated from the surrounding blue rock. (i.e. natural combination hones)

And as some one mentioned to me privately, back in the day they didn't use slate (a recent thing) to reinforce the coticule. They used what they had in abundance...the BBW. So the vintage is a very think natural combo. I will have to take some pics of the underside (BBW side) as it is very different superficially compared to the other larger hone shown above.

Seeing this thread, I just checked my 8x3 that came today--very similar grey-blue swirl pattern on the sides/top. Nice to know I got a rare one; I can't wait to shave tomorrow!

No, it's okay to look at them.
It might be okay to touch them.
Just don't break the 10 commandment--thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's hones.
