I have a Shapton GS 30K (have had & used for months now) and a Nakayama Asagi (that I just recently got). My initial tests show that I get a smoother edge (more balance of sharp & smooth) than with the 30K alone. I've been using i with water only, and not raising a slurry.

I never went down to 0.25 micron diamond paste, so I can't offer my thoughts on that. 0.5 diamond was always a little harsh for me even though it was sharp. 0.5 CrOx acts similar to the yellow coticule to me in that it seems to remove some of the keenness along with adding smoothness.

Please consider that I do not have a lot of time with the Asagi, and I don't experiment nearly as much as others with the pastes or some of the other natural stones. So, my experiences and techniques are less refined than others here on the forum.

    Me, too!

Unfortunately, That makes one difficult to buy for. I've taken to saying things like "Any x from y website."

It would be real easy to say "any hone from oldschoolshaving.net. Just ask the proprietor which is the best."

And, although it would be the one I have my eye on, you're set!

Oh, you said Febuary. Unfortunately for you, my b-day is in Oct. I am sure that O_S will have something almost as good by Feb.

My plan is to tell O_S which one I want and have him tell Mrs Py when she emails him . Problem solved. The hardest part is going to be getting her to have her own Paypal account.

You could probably tell him to look for something for you for Feb and have him put it on the site after October (so I don't buy it). Tell your wife you know he is getting in a shipment of special stones in Oct.

When one has special desires, a certain amount of subterfuge is indicated.

Maybe we should go in on it together, and split custody...

I hear ya I also looked at the wedge shaped one. You have to hold that one in your hand but it would work and at less than half the price.
