When I lap my Chinese hone, I use 240 and 500 grit sandpaper on glass....this does not leave any visible scratches and it feels smooth as glass.
The only problem I have had is with the sand paper moving around...I solved this by spraying a bit of spray adhesive on the paper and sticking it to the glass, instead of using the water to hold it.....maybe I'm just using too much pressure though.

Thanked: 2I just finished using 3M Wet/Dry 600 and then 1000 paper on a marble tile. I used two sheets of each sand paper and it took about 30-45 minutes. It worked well.

Thanked: 11I lapped a supposedly flat 2x8 chinese on an 8000 DMT plate, and it worked well, other than being slow. I don't think 8000 grit was required, but it was handy and it worked fine. If I needed to lap it again I'd probably do it the same way.
