    Default bevel setters

I have norton 1k and dmt1200 and recently naniwa 1200. I don't use norton as it drys out to quik. I'm just setting bevel with naniwa and testing by tpt bevel seems there but tpt not as sticky as usaul. so i have just done 10 laps on my dmt and the edge feels sticky as hell i went back and did 10 more laps on naniwa and not quite as sticky . tnt real drag and grip of dmt1200 after naniwa drag but not strong as dmt my bevel feels much sharper of the dmt does any one no why this could be?

I have to say i have always been amazed how the dmt sets a bevel its easy to use and so flat i have to say its my number one choice of bevel setter at the moment oviously the naniwa is new but i have to say it does seem to cut quikley. which one are you guys finding works best?

I haven't got the Naniwa ... yet... but I find the DMT 1200 is the fastest. I proceed with caution when using the DMT because it is so fast. I also use the Shapton pro 1k followed by the 2k. My Norton 1k is alright but I consider it slow. With my Nortons I find that keeping them in water all of the time helps with them not drying out as fast when I am honing with them. I just have to change the water every so often to avoid slime building up.

the naniwa is faster than norton and has realy good feel quite smooth actualy, dmt is quik but not much between naniwa 1k just of dmt the edges feel realy sharp and then i find they calm down and feel smoother once 4k n has been used.

btw is it possible to over hone with 1k stage basicly can it be possible to over do it i tend to stop when bevel looks nice and even from heal to toe and when i get a real griping sensation across wet nail.

When I get a positive TNT I do a few more x strokes on my bevel setter to undo any damage the TNT my have done and then move on to my 4k. I do not use the TNT again but go to the TPT. Those Naniwas sound like they are really more suited to razor honing than the other synthetic options. I mean what i read about the softness and feedback compared to the Norton and the Shapton offerings. I will be interested in seeing what they are like firsthand.

I agree that the DMT cuts faster, or at least I *THINK* it does. However, the scratches it leaves are undesireable to me. I prefer the Naniwa 1k. Or at the least I will finish with 20-40 laps on the Nani to mitigate the scratches on the DMT. However, I don't finish completely on the DMT before moving to the Nani if I do that. I get it close and then let the Nani finish. I'm trying to ween myself off of the DMT too.

Yes, I reserve the DMT for tough jobs such as wedges and previously abused edges on some ebay acquisitions. If I can get it with the Shap pro 1k I will default to that and if the edge is close enough at the start I will go right to the 4k.

I am a DMT guy too that recently purchased a naniwa 1k. You can read my trials and tribulations on the forum...

I think it is just adjusting to a new hone. I am finally starting to get the hang of it.

I have been experimenting w/ using dmt for initial bevel, then naniwa to remove scratches before 4k level and just uses naniwa....

Go with Naniwa you will win in a long run.
Dmt does cuts faster and put very nice edge but it will not last longer. if you use it normal sharpening 2-4 blades for a day 6 months dmt is gone. Gl
