Thanked: 0Flattening my nortons?
Hy guys,
I would like to flatten my nortons.
Is there any way i could do this without spending a lot of cash.
Maybe even a DIY advice on how to do it using various grit of sand papers.
Any info and links on this will be very appreciated!

Look over this and let me know what questions/comments you have.
You can use sandpaper, but i think in the long run you are going to be better off buying a DMT D8C(8x3 325 grit Dia-Sharp)

Thanked: 488I went to a local home supply store and got a heavy piece of glass and placed my wet dry sandpaper on it to make a flat surface. You can tape the corner or use water on the bottom of the sandpaper to make it stick.
Then you can use some 320 grit and move up 600 and it will flatten the hone nicely. Just keep the hone and top of the sandpaper wet. You can use vertical motion and circular motions.
Before you start though use a pencil and ruler and make crisscross marks on the hone as well as some straight across lines so you'll know when it's flat since the lines you drew are gone. You also need to rinse off the hone and sandpaper a few times to keep the grit working.
It takes about 15 minutes average if that.

Thanked: 0Thanks for the info!
It was pretty much in the ballpark I was thinking already.
My question still remains about how far up sand paper grit should I go for lapping 4000 and how far should I go for the 8000 grit Norton?
Should I go even finer for 8000 or just finsh both of them on 600?

Thanked: 488600 is plenty even for the 8000. Some folks even use the 325 alone for all hones. It just makes the surface a bit rougher for a little while. There is no need to go above 600 even for a 12,000 hone.
