Unfortunately it seems that my DMT is losing diamonds on the surface....It's not dead and still has most of its diamonds, but I realized how worn it's been getting when I was lapping with it today. There are small patches that grew during the lapping (under running water I might add) where the diamonds are gone. I think it would be best to retire it from barber hones as they would only hurt it now.
So I will have to suspend this service until/if I get new equipment for rough lapping. Sorry!Last edited by StraightRazorDave; 08-16-2009 at 06:55 PM.

Thanked: 124I don't know a whole lot about them, but I think they have vibratory rock polishers that are designed to abrade a stone perfectly flat. They're expensive (like 300$), but if you wanted to offer a service asking 7-20 bucks (depending on the hone) you'd get the cost back and start making some money after a while, and provide a needed service. I know I'd rather just pay someone then try to lap a Arkansas stone or Spyderco UF again... that really is a chore.

Thanked: 522DMT on Swaty ??
Seems to me there was a recent post advising not to lap a Swaty on the DMT ...
Can anyone remember that post or tell me whether or not it's OK to Lap a Swaty on my DMT 8C ??

I have Leightons famous DMT8XXC that went through some spyderco work. It still laps Nortons and other barber hones that I have picked up. It is a totally awesome lapper and maybe it is cause he tammed it down a bit I really love the surface it leaves on them.

Thanked: 522DMT on Swaty
The reason I asked about the Swaty is because when I lapped it, I noticed a brown spot in the center of the DMT and it won't come out. It still laps other stones but I will not use it for a Swaty anymore.
Because of the brown spot, I don't recommend lapping a Swaty on the DMT 8C.

I'm actually going to get a DMT D8XXC sometime in the future. It's apparently a beast with lapping. So I will offer the lapping service again once I get that stone, and can lap even the hardest barber hones.
