Thanked: 335So, reading between the lines here and also being a tyro honer, it would appear that I should wear out my assortment of novaculite hones before investing in the Naniwa series. This may take a while. It certainly would have been to my advantage had I learned of this effort at comparisons early on in the days of my youth, back in those days of yore.
Anybody sway-backed a Ouachita? How'd it go?

Thanked: 4942Gary,
Please don't get me wrong here. I think the Shapton Glass stones are fine stones and capable of doing a very good job. It's just preference at this time and that really is it.
Thanks,
Lynn

Thanked: 13245No I would not say that at all, I would say that Glen is very, very comfortable with the 1k Norton and I know that stone so well that anytime I have a problem razor I will sort it out on the N1k... then switch to the Naniwas or Shaptons...
I very rarely use the N 4/8 any more although I have them in 3 x 8 and 1.5 x 8 I use the N8k just a bit in experiments now and then to prove a point to myself.... I run about 65% Naniwa 30% Shapton and 5% others now-a-days....In answer to your next question of how I decide between the stones it has very little to do with the razors, and much more to do with who sent them to me....

Thanked: 4942I tend to look at the Norton 1K and 4K as more aggressive vs. quicker. Might be splitting hairs though.......
