    Default Norton Question

I am thinking of buying the Norton Waterstone kit that has the 220/1000 and 4k/8k and flattening stone. I have a couple of questions about this. To start I am just entering the world of straight shaving and addictions and have never honed. Will I even use the 220/1000 combo or am I just waisting money. My intent is to learn how to hone on a couple of cheapo straights I have. My other question is whether the flattening stone will work for lapping or do I need a DMT?

I started out with 4k 8k and it was'nt long before i got the 1k yes you will use it at some point maybe not the 220 but still good to have.I also got the norton flaterning stone its ok but i soon got dmtc 8x3 and it is alot better in the way it leaves a much better surface for my straights and the norton flatterning stone also needs lapping i rounded the corners of with my n flaterning stone and it wore a grove in the surface straight away. I highly recomend the dmtc that could be used instead of 220 norton also
for big chips mydmtc laps every thing including my naniwas nortons barber hone coticules etc.

So the Norton flattening stone is only so-so. I think I will start off with the 4/8 combo and a DMT diamond to flatten. Thanks for the info, it was very helpful

I had been buying free for the last 3 months with DE shaving. Then I got bored and my credit card got lonely. Besides HAD I think I have other AD problems as well. Where is the nearest addiction meeting?

You think your HAD is bad... I just got the full set of Shaptons and I'm considering getting the Naniwas as well as a J Nat finishing stone

I would still get the Norton set in full, then add the DMT 325 if needed later...

Everyone starts this with every intention of only getting 1-3 razors and those are going to be new or pre-honed, blah, blah, blah....

Then rad hits and your e-bay account goes nuts, and trust me here, doing e-babies you WILL use the heck outta the N1k and even now and then the N220...
After the Norton lapping stone wears away the back is still good for other uses...

So you think the Norton lapping stone is good enough to lap with? I am just starting with this stuff so do I even need to worry about a DMT to lap with at this stage?---Thank you!!!

Another option is to spend a couple bucks on a granite tile, get some sandpaper and lap with that.
