Thanked: 48rock hone
last weekend i found myself camped by a creek here in switzerland. getting some much needed r&r. didnt bring much to entain myself other than my shaveing kit ( shaveing in the woods is devine) and my pocket knife to wittle with . the piece of wood i was working on was some sort of hardwood and inbeded with sand to boot ,needless to say my knife dulled quickly . what to do? well lot of faily flat rocks at hand i picked up one that had a very flat side and stroked away. wow sharpend right up not the best edge ever but it worked. so i took this rock home and worked it over with a dmt.and now my edge shaves, polished bevels. got me to thinking could any rock be a razor hone just laying there waiting to be lapped?the one i have now is too small to be a razor hone but ill be looking for the right size soon . what do you think?

Do you want to sell it ????
I'm only kidding.
The first time I remember seeing anyone sharpen anything I was maybe 7 or 8 years old. An older kid was sitting by the curb on the sidewalk doing circles on the edge of the curb with his pocket knife. Your experience brought that occasion to mind.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I also think, in ancient times, that what you did, was how alot of the best natural hones we have today, were discovered.
Thanks,

Just about anything can be used to sharpen a knife or razor, even water. The question is how long will it take and how good a job it will do and will it cause damage to the edge you might not at first realize.

Exactly. The same thing came to mind. Necessity is the mother of invention after all.
I remember Murrey Carter in his video where he uses a concrete block and cardboard to sharpen a knife. YouTube - Sharpening a knife on a concrete block... and cardboard!
I also remember a video where someone uses stones in a river to sharpen his knife in a very different way....I think it's cool. YouTube - Cost Rica Knife Sharpening
