    Default A lapp for a shapton 16K?

    Hi I'm a newbie to SR shaving. i just bought a shapton 16K stone. Is there a lapp that would be suitable but cheaper than the shapton one?

    DMT 8" Coarse. You can use it to sharpen knives as well.

    +1 on the 8" Course. It is exactly what I use on my 16k Shapton. Make sure lap it under running water.

    Sandpaper. Progress from around 400 to around 1000 grit.

    +1 on the sandpaper. Shaptons and Naniwa's respond quickly to wet-dry sandpaper. You can buy a big, flat 12"x12" granite tile for about $5 to use as a surface for the 9"x11" sandpaper sheets. Set it in the sink so you can let the fawcet drip water onto the paper as you lap. I suppose you might worry about the paper grit contaminating the waterstone, but I have not had that problem. I have a DMT XXC plate, but I like the sandpaper method better for these soft waterstones.
