Thanked: 2Hones -- Swaty and others
Hello everyone -- first post on SRP. I've been reviewing materials on this site for a while, and I appreciate everyone's knowledge and insights.
I bought several hones at an antique store recently. There are two Swatys and one unmarked hone. The Swatys are very smooth and I wonder if they've been worn to the point where they won't work effectively anymore. They don't really seem abraisive to me at all. The other stone feels like it would be mildly abraisive. I'm wondering if anyone can help me identify that hone. Also does anyone have any thoughts on the effectiveness of the Swatys? Pictures are attached.
Thanks.
Monty.

Welcome to SRP. Swaty will feel smooth but it is a very good touch up hone. It is normal for it to feel smooth IME. I don't know what the other hone you have there is. I've not seen a short Swaty like that before. Here in the SRP Wiki image files scroll down and you will find instructions for using the Swaty.

Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Hi Monty, welcome to SRP. It's Friday night and things are a bit slow here. Normally you'd get a quicker response. I'm no expert on hones but I'll give you a few thoughts to keep you going until the experts arrive.
The Swatys you've purchased are barber hones that are used to maintain a razor that is already sharp, but just starting to dull a little from use. The Swatys are among the most sought after barber hones. Judging from the pictures I would say all the hones look to be in good shape. You mention they are "very smooth," which is a good thing. Since they are designed to put a fine edge on the blade.
The other gray colored hone I'm not so certain about. Does it have any markings on it? Someone else will probably be able to help. It looks somewhat similar to the hone in this post but I'm not sure:

At any rate good finds!

Thanked: 2Thanks guys. I appreciate the comments very much. The gray stone has no markings on it at all -- it does look like the frictionite stone. Looking at it from the side, it appears to be somewhat layered; although, you don't see that on the main surfaces at all.
