Thanked: 735Naniwa 12000 or Spyderco UF?
Looking for a finisher to take over from my usual lapping flim habit (OK, I'll never actually give them up, just looking for a new hone, you know....
)
Anybody have experience with both the Spydy UF and Naniwa SS 12K? Thoughts, comments, suggestions?

Thanked: 1262I have experience with the naniwa and liked it.
No experience with the spyderco, but word on the street is they are a pain to lap.

I've got both and I would go for the Naniwa every time. The Spydercos are just too slow and offer no feedback whatsoever IME.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 4942On the Naniwa Super 12K, I usually get what I need in 10-15 strokes with good consistency. With the Sypderco UF, you can get there, but it could be 30 or 50 or 100 strokes so consistency is really not there for me.
Have fun,
Lynn

Thanked: 735Thanks guys.
I tried a Spydy "fine", and I didn't care much for the way it felt.
Hmm...I guess I best head over to SRD, and see what's happenin'

Thanked: 11I don't have any Naniwas or the UF, but I do have a Spyderco Medium and Fine.
I agree that the Spydercos have basically no "feel" to them at all, so I don't use mine anymore.
You can coax a little bit of feedback out of them if you use soapy water, as has been suggested for DMTs. Still not much fun to use though, but a bit more bearable.

Thanked: 127I have both. Get the 12k nani. Spyderco UF is a polisher only.
Enjoy!

Thanked: 9I've both and I don't agree at all that you don't have feed-back with the Spyderco UF. But it's a feed-back based on sound.
After 10 -15 very light laps on the stone, the sound it makes changes suddenly and resembles the sound of a drawing sword "like in the movies".
Hearing this sound is the moment to stop the honing.
The spyderco is an excellent finisher. I use both, and the Spyderco Uf comes right after the Naniwa 12K. Pasting with chromoxid isn't necessary afterwards.Last edited by kingreverent; 09-29-2009 at 11:42 PM.

Curious, is your UF stock or lapped?
