DMT 1.2k -> scratching the hone?!
Hello there,
I recently opened a thread concearning a slurrying-system.
I chose to buy a DMT Extra-fine (1.2k / 9micron) credit card size.
Smart as I am, I broke it in vigorously.
I sharpened a completely dull chisel and boy the diamonds got finer.
I "lapped" some hard stones I had laying around like a swaty.
Then I tried to slurry my frankonian slate,
with great success. The slurry was built quite easily.
But, as soon as the hone dried I saw nasty scratch marks,
left by the DMT.
I relapped the hone with 1.5k sandpaper,
re-broke in the DMT by another sharpening session,
I even sanded the edges of the card
but still, the DMT 1.2k leaves nasty scratch marks.
Is this normal behaviour for the DMT 1.2k?!?

I use DMT1200 on slate with no issues. however it was extensively broken in first on heavy steel removal and lapping synthetic hones

This issues you may be experiencing could be the diamonds on the edges of the DMT D8E. I would focus on breaking in the edges by running a chisel over the edges at a 45 degree angle.
If that still doesn't work then I'd lap on sandpaper to remove the scratches then do one pass over the surface of the DMT and let the stone dry to see if you can tell if there is a certain spot that is a culprit?

This is why I stopped using DMT plates on my knives. The diamonds tend to break off at times and have a rolling shard digging DEEPLY into the surface, the 120 left CANYONS in some knives that I still have yet to remove. My plates are well broken in now but I still pass on them for regular stone use.
