Thanked: 10scotch tape residue on Swaty
I just picked up a Swaty hone at an antique store.
The price tag was held on with scotch tape wrapped around it. The tape came off, but the glue stayed.
Any recommendations on how to get off the glue? Carb cleaner? Peanut butter (oily)? If I've read correctly, I don't want to use any type of oil to loosen it.
I know they're harder than rocks, but I'd hate to use some chemical and screw up the hone.
What have you used?
Thanks,
Kevin

You're probably going to have to lap the surface, and the residue will come off during lapping. If you're not going to lap, you should be able to scrape the residue off with a single edge razor, a junker straight, or a DE (though I would not suggest using a DE since that's dangerous).

A bit of lighter fluid or nail polish remover should take off the residue withoug damaging the stone.

Thanked: 1262I agree with holli. I would lap it to make sure it is flat, this will also remove any crap on the hone itself.
You can use Wet/Dry sandpaper or a lapping plate.
Here is a nice guide with pictures and everything... The wiki makes my heart all a flutter sometimes..

Rubbing alcohol will work. A Swaty's a water stone, so it shouldn't hurt a thing.
I strop my razor with my eyes closed.

Thanked: 10Thanks, all
Thanks for the suggestions. Rubbing alcohol I have here, so I'll start with that. I 'll test a small portion to be sure the alcohol doesn't harm it.
I know I'll to lap it. After reading the many posts about lapping one of these, I'll set aside the good part of an afternoon. I have coarse wet/dry and no DMT, so I'll plan for a workout.
I have a carborundum that was a pain and if I've understood correctly, the swaty will be worse.
*sigh* Oh, well. the sacrifices we must make.
Or I could lap the the Droescher, I guess.
Thanks,
Kevin

If you're going to lap the surface with the residue, there's not really any point to remove it with alcohol; it will come off during the lapping process.
