Default Norton Hone Set From Amazon

I broke down and ordered a set of Norton 220/1000 and 4000/8000 stones from Amazon. They even included a SiC flattening stone. Now, the problem. Amazon packs this stuff with as little packing material as they can get away with. ($$$) The flattening stone is, naturally in the bottom of the box and mine arrived broken. Amazon's sending a replacement set and paying the shipping of the original set back to them. I called Amazon and spoke to a person on another continent, who put a note in the computer to make certain I don't get an encore performance.

My advice is to order by phone and have them check the item before packing and over pack it.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience, and Amazon is very easy to deal with about replacing defective/broken items.
I however am a bit skeptical about phone ordering. A few months back I was shopping for yanagiba from Korin. I called specifically to make sure they will inspect the knife for defects etc. and imagine my frustration when I opened the package and I found a bent blade and a chipped handle...

    I can relate to that. I guess it's all a crap-shoot.
