Congrats Mac! As long as it gives the results you are happy with does it really matter what label it is? Here's to lots of great shaves!

Thanked: 132Well, i shaved with a straight honed on this stone, last night. The shave wasnt quite as good as i get with my Charnley, but it was still quite passable...that could be inexperience honing with this particular stone. I'll keep at it.
This stone, is undoubtedly a scottish hone...the smells and textures are consistent with the stones from there. I have had the pleasure of having 8 scottish hones and all of them have that distinct odor and texture to them...If anyone is aware, of a darker, somewhat black stone, from Scotland, other than the WOA, i would really be appreciative, in hearing about it. :-)
As always, thanks gents.,

Could it be a vintage DT?

Thanked: 132When i bought the stone, i figured it was probably a chunk of welch slate...however, it doesnt lap, smell or feel the same as the DT, when honing.
Actually, the stone feels alot like a Dalmore Blue or TOS, when honing...just darker, unpatterned and without the spots...and it does finish higher. I did try shaving off a TOS and didnt care for it much.
Thanks Dylan,
Mac

Congratulations, Mac!
It looks an awful lot like the amazing Water Of Ayr dual-sided hone that recently went for big bucks on eBay to me (completed item 320431905204 in case the link doesn't work). A little darker and wider than the eBay one, which is listed at 7 3/4" x 1 3/8". No visible saw marks on the eBay WOA either. The eBay WOA is photographed wet, in sunlight.
I'd directly post pictures from the completed auction for comparison, but I don't want to violate any forum rules. They're not marked as copyrighted, but neither the hone nor the pictures are mine to post. If it's OK to post pics from completed eBay listings, I do have them.

Thanked: 132Thanks Tim,
I watched that auction and i agree that they look very similar...both from the top and the side view. The texture comes through, from the side. My "WOA," was used with oil...which might explain why its a bit darker...?
I forgot to mention, that i did buy this stone, out of Scotland, from an antique dealer...
I honed with it again tonight, using oil...didnt figure it could harm, since it came that way and they finishing edge was quite a bit better than i got the other night...i'll give 'er a shave again tomorrow to see...maybe next time, follow the WOA, with the Charnley, to see if there is improvement...
Thanks,

Thanked: 132Well, now that i've hone a few straights on this baby, i can say she definately gives a fine shaving edge...better with oil, imo. However, she's not as fine as the Charnley...so i can guess she's easily greater than 8K shapton, but the edge/polish still improves off of the Charnley Forest...maybe she's about 10-12K? Heh...
He, he...grits applied to natural stones...pbbbbththt! ;-)
Thanks for reading guys and gals,
Mac

we reasonably certain that this is a WOA, and that it fits between the shapton 8k and the charnley forest?
