    Default My Charnley forest

Adrspach found this wonderful stone for me and made a nice box for it, too. He has one Charnley for sale in the Classifieds section, check it out. He is a very good guy so do not hesitate and get it if you like it.

The photos look bleak compared to reality. The stone is of deep olive green color. I have yet to put it through its paces, but it seems to be an excellent finisher that leaves a very fine "misty" scratch pattern on edges.

Very nice stone, I agree with you when you say that photos never seem to do them justice, they just don't seem to catch the full spectrum of colour or the depth of the grain. My Charnley Hones are my favourite finishers, they are better than most others I've tried, and even manage to hold their own against the expensive, ultra high-end Japanese naturals.

    Kindest regards,
    Alex

My most expensive J- nats were a $3200 Nakayama Maruichi Maruka Kiita w/ Nasiji and a Su- free Okudo Suita from a private collection (I'm not even going to go into how much that one cost). My personal favourite is a Nakayama Iro Awaseto which cost $1200. The Iro is my favourite hone out of all the ones I own, but the two Whittle Hill Charnley's I have are as good and cost much less, I just like the Iro a fraction more because it is a touch quicker, and builds up a slurry on it's own after a few passes. The Kiita and the Okudo are exceptional hones in their own right, but the edges of the Charnley's are slightly more smooth and no less sharp.

I'm still on the lookout for a Charnley from the Thringstone Quarry, as according to the workers who actually processed the stone for sale, they were far and away the best hones the area had to offer.

    Kindest regards,
    Alex

Thank you Sparq. You had an advantage that you could try and compare the stone with my others. Let me know what will be your results when you use it either with or without the slurry.

That is a big, bad, beautiful stone. I love the box too, almost gives it a Japanese natural look. Thank you for posting the pics.

I love Charneys, they are great finishers that are sometimes very showy like yours, and can still be obtained at non-heirloom prices.

Congrats on your new Charnley Forest stone...they are of course beautiful and with some practice, will produce a very fine finished edge for ya.
