Thanked: 151Anyone tried one of These

I am debating adding a hone to my chinese 12K. I can't decide if I want to go with the Shapton 16K or one of these. I have use the smaller fine version of these hones adn they work, but they are slow cutting.
I might even buy a coticule, but I am not convinced that they are any better then the chinese 12K for finishing.
Thanks for any input.

Thanked: 522We here at "Way Too Many Hones Central" recommend that you sell your Chinese to an unsuspecting newbie and buy a Naniwa 12k Superstone. Far fewer laps and a super shaving edge.

I've found that my C12k gives a finer finish than my coticule, but both are natural so there is variation.
I've not used the SpydercoUF, but there is information about in on B&B. I don't think I've seen much talk about it here, but that just be because I've not looked.

Thanked: 127Before I answer your question about the chinese stone, I need to ask you a couple of questions.
What stones do you currently own and what progression do you use up to the chinese stone?
Why do you want to replace the chinese stone with something else?
Answering these questions could give us more needed information to help you with your question.

Thanked: 151I own a Norton 220/1K, 4K/8K and Chinese 12K. I use about a 10-15 lap progression on each and then test and then try again. But, I usually use the 1K to set bevels, then the 4K/8K about 20 laps, then I finish with the 12K about 30 laps. Then I test it, and if I feel its right, I move to a strop with CrOx paste then hit the canvas about 50 then leather about 75. Then its the shave test.
It works well, I am just trying to move from "very good" to "wicked". I am jsut tryign to move on up.
Thanks for the help guys.

Thanked: 4942My problem is that with the Chinese 12K, you could use 30 laps, 50 laps or a hundred laps with the consistency not being all that great. They do work though. The Spyderco UF is actually pretty similar and I find similar results to the Chinese 12K. A nice Coticule will also work and actually provide a little more consistency. For even more consistency, an Escher is always good and a good Japanese Natural too. Considering your current routine and progression, a Shapton 16 might give you a little more zing in the edge, but then maybe not. You also might want to play around with some different pastes and even the films. The key is to find that sweet spot that works for you on a consistent basis and that only comes from honing a ton of razors.

Try Lynn's pyramid with the Nortons. It is here in the SRP Wiki. The finisher is up to you but the pyramid works really well for me whether with the Nortons, Naniwas or the Shaptons. I've got the Spydercos and I don't like them. I also have a Chinese 12k but TBH I've never really messed with it.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I was really into the Spyderco stones for a while. After you first lap them they start gloriously fast, and cut really fine... and then they slow down to a crawl.
They also have minimal feedback, which in some cases can be good if you have a really light touch.
I tried using one with a slurry via a small diamond pocket hone as the "slurry stone" and it did the same thing, albeit with more feedback. I posted a thread about it somewhere....

If you use tape when doing final passes they do a good job, but it's a pain to have to go to tape EVERY time you finish a razor IMHO.
