Thread: Found my finisher finally

After trying the Nakayama I got earlier this month I found out I need a better finishing stone. I talked to people and ended up buying an Oohira Suita rated in the high 30k grit range.
I got the stone in the mail today, and immediately went on to test on 2 razors.

The razors were finished on Nakayama, CrO, leather strop.
I ran ~ 80 passes (40x40 circles) on the Oohra, and under 100x I could definitely see that the scratch pattern was much finer than the Nakayama.
I decided to test shave with both razors and see how it feels.
I shaved right off the hone, no stropping no CrO, no beard prep.
I quickly face lathered with a Mamabear's soap, and shaved half face with one razor and half face with the other.
Shave was smooth and easy, definitely better than all my shaves so far.
Razors used:
#13 Filarmonica Double temple
Historic Spartacus 6/8-7/8

Now you need to see where the hone can take you by progressively eliminating intermediate hones. I know that OLD_SCHOOL advocates the J-Nats can take an edge all the way from 8K. I have also done a razor up to 5K and then took it all the way with a single high grit J-Nat. It took a lot of work as the hone was very small, but it was/is possible. I am trying to decide if I need the coticule in between my Chosera and my Oohira suita. I love my coticules though...

This stone is pretty special.
I just honed a razor from scratch, I set the bevel on Beston 500
Chosera 1k, Chosera 3k, Super stone 5k.
Then I put the razor on this hone and with some slurry it did not take too long to get finished bevel.
Stropped and will test shave tomorrow.

The stone reads down the label SEI HON NAURTAKI, and on the stone is ink stamped SUI ITA. This is a Narutaki stone, not an Ohira. The mines are only about 8 miles away from each other as the crow flies, but they are different mines. The Narutaki mine is well known for their suita strata stones, many with those rust leaf patterns like yours which aid in cutting speed. The Ohira suita are known for their renge patterns in their suita stones. good luck with it, Alx
