Diamond Plate: Lansky vs. DMT
I am wondering if there are any of you out there that can say one is better than the other? Or that both are great?
I am wanting to get one to use as a lapping plate, and wonder if there is any major difference in the quality and usability of one over the other?
Thanks.笑う門に福来たる。

Yeah, I am wanting to find out if the diamond hones (can find on ebay in sets of 3 different grits) can be used for lapping. Something like the ones in the following link:
LG DIAMOND TOOL HONE SHARPENING STONE BLOCK SHARPENER - eBay (item 250415473388 end time Dec-24-09 15:07:43 PST)
Thanks.

IMHO a stone any smaller than the stone you're lapping is gonna create an uneven surface in one way or another. You may be able to use those stones to raise a slurry with no pressure but as far as maintaining a true flat surface you'd want to go with a DMT plate. Also I suggest the surface of the plate being continuous (meaning no intermittent surface as found with some diamond hones) as when I used an intermittent plate ( http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA280_.jpg )the slurry gathered in the indentations and my diamond plate is far less abrasive than it used to be.
I recently found a DMT D11X which is a continuous diamond plate with the xtra coarse grit rating and is 11" in length. perfect for flattening practically any hone out there without going off the stone, even a nortone 8x3. some japanese naturals that exceed 3" wide may have to be treated differently, but as I don't own any of them I can't give any information on that.
Another problem with those cheap diamond plates is that the backing is rather thin and the set I looked at at Harbor Freight i could flex the plate. Just a thought.
