Thanked: 0Ebay hone
Just lapped a hone I got from eBay.
It was a dark black when I got it, but after lapping it, it tuned out to be a gray with almost a sparkly finish.
The hone is very smooth 10 in long, just under 1 in wide.
I'll post some pictures later on tonight when I can get to my camera.

Thanked: 0The hone is soft and easy to scratch. I lapped it with not much work with some lapping grit on glass. 80 X and then 400 X.
The hone feels like a 10 000 or 12 000 grit.

Thanked: 0After looking around a bit i thinks the hone is a Tam O'Shanter.
What do you guys think.
Also if it is a Tam O'Shanter is it worth much.

It ain't a Tam from the look of the photo you posted. A Tam is speckley but not sparkley. It is a very light gray with usually bluish speckles.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 132What does the hone smell like, when lapping...earthy/peaty scent? What color is the slurry generated?
It could be an old Water of Ayr, given its black color and sparkly inclusions...just guessing, however, the 10-12K honing quality also supports the WOA. Keep in mind, i am giving a very limited opinion, on this...your hone looks alot like mine as well as performs in the same grit range, but ive yet to completely verify, mine as a WOA.
Many thanks,

Thanked: 0I did' t realy pay attention when I lapped it at the smell. I know that the slurry is a whitish gray color with a shimmering quality like sparkles.
I'll use some fine grit sand paper and water to see what the smells is like later on tonight
