Naniwa sticker problem
I received my Naniwa 12k this afternoon and when I opened it, I discovered that a large sticker was glued to the surface of the stone. I tried to get up under a corner of the sticker so I could pull it off, to no avail. I then soaked the stone in water for about 20 minutes thinking that perhaps a water-soluble adhesive had been used, but such was not the case. To make a long story short, I ended up gouging the face of the stone with my thumbnail just getting the sticker off. These are soft stones, so it makes no sense to me to have stickers glued to the face; but, nevertheless, the stickers are there, so I would like to warn anyone getting a Naniwa to be very, very careful when removing the sticker -- the stones are much softer than most other stones.

Thanked: 235My Naniwa never had any stickers. But even so, I lapped it a lot before I used it.

These stickers are horrible! I can tell, I had 5 of those.
You have to gently remove them with your finger, avoiding scratching them much.
Afterwards you HAVE to lap the stone.
The glue residues on the stone will interfere with your honing.
So you have to lap the stone anyway, now lap it until the scratches you produced (and the glue residues) are gone
Afterwards you will have fun with the stone

[rant alert]
Stickers (and their glue) are always horrible! No matter whereon. Why is it that with all the advertisement and instruction space on the abundant (mostly superfluous!) packaging surfaces manufacturers still feel the need to disgrace their products themselves with stickers? Is it mistrust of the customer's good sense in using the product? Of the quality of their goods speaking for itself?
Please stop the sticker terror!

Et ceterum censeo that what they ^ said is right.

The stickers on Naniwa Superstones are just plain stupid but to get to the great stone underneath you've got to go through them. I guess they figure that since every stone has to be lapped out of the box anyway that it's no big deal to do deal with the stickers but it's still stupid non-the-less. So peel the sticker and lap the residual glue away and it's done.
