Thread: warning newbie...warning newbie

okay I got that out of the way - I beginning to shed my newbie layers though - however although I started and fairly well mastered a shavette I have now received my first two true straight razors - clearly I am going to need a honing stone (s) and a strop (s) anybody have any suggestions about where to get some good starter pieces from???

So what sort of honing do you want to do - bevel setting/touch ups, etc.? Unless you want to buy everything in one go that will probably influence the advice you get.

honings will be for touch ups and what I presume will be general or standard maintenance of the straight razor

Right now, the strop's the important thing. Consider a starter stop from KenRup or Tony Miller, when he opens again.

As for a hone, if it's just for touch up's, a barber's hone is a good option. You can get them from Glen, or from the bay.

Ben.mid is right: if you have a shave-ready razor, with proper care you may not need any hone for up to several months. When eventually you do, a barbers' hone or a Guangxi (C12k) hone come to mind as cheap, readily available and adequate for restoring the sharpness.

Excellent advice above! If it's maintenance you are looking for, a CrOx pasted strop and a leather strop will provide all you need for a while unless you manage to damage the edge somehow.

For a pasted strop, you can easily make one yourself if you choose, or for the price of postage, I would be glad to send you one.
