Default So, I got this new USB Microscope..... Pic heavy!

Messing about with this USB microscope and decided to take some pics of honing progression with lapping paper. Magnification is at 400x. Focusing is hard when I am holding it by hand, so sorry if they are blurry. Shaved with it after honing and it did a pretty good job. I don't know anything about this razor. Has 'Hollow Ground in Germany' on one side and 'SUCCESS' on the other. It measures 6/8".

First pic is using 30 micron and 1 layer of tape.

Next, 15 micron and 1 layer of tape.

Next, 9 micron and 1 layer of tape.

Next, 5 micron and 2 layers of tape.

Next, 1 micron and 2 layers of tape.

Finally, 0.3 micron and 2 layers of tape.

Nice progression and pics. I'm not sure what the tape is about but pretty cool stuff.

The tape confuses me too, because your bevels look to be the same size to me. Regardless, the pictures look nice.

Great pictures! Just out of curiosity, did you go from 1 layer of tape to 2 fresh layers, or did you simply add another layer at that point?

1 layer of tape to set bevel and smooth it down a bit. Then 2 fresh layers of tape to finish it off. When using 30 and 15 micron grit it goes through the tape pretty quickly, so I put 2 fresh layers to finish polishing the edge up.

The tape is put on the spine to protect it from the honing, especially on the rougher grits. The second is put on so you only are just touching the cutting edge and up the bevel about half way.

    Okay, thanks for the explanation.

(BTW, pics labeled 3 and 1 micron are the same image, and so are the pics labeled 15 and 9.)

Which USB microscope did you get out of curiosity?

when you looik at the scratch pattern on the edges you can see the difference in angle be it so slight

thats why the tap VS no tape is so funny its less then an degree
total and a bit of pressure while honing can wipe out the 1 layer as apposed to 2 layer

Oops. Yes they are. Don't understand that. Well, not much of a difference between 5 and 3 micron. Deleted 3 micron pic.

    Good eye.

Oh, I got a Veho Discovery.

Yeah, changes the angle less than a degree. I use tape just to protect the spine. Had to hone out a chip in blade so spent a while getting that out. All of my razors so far have been old used ones but with a little TLC they shave just fine.
