Thanked: 4Timber Tools
Has anyone bought a hone from Timbertools.com? They have a "new" Escher (I know they aren't original Escher brand) and a Thuringen. Are these any good?

I just purchased a Thuringen stone from them this week (after a meetup with some SRP members, I developed some hone-envy). I haven't used it yet, but it sure looks nice. Came with a little wooden frame box and slurry stone similar to the Eschers I have seen...
From what I've read here and elsewhere, the Thuringen's are some nice finishing stones in the 10-12,000 grit range. If you run a search in the Wiki, there are some examples of edges produced by the Thuringen under magnification for you to compare against the Escher, etc.

JoeD has one, so maybe he'll chime in here.
I do not have one, but I've seen other members saying that this new one from TT is not as fine as the vintage ones. I'm not sure quite what range the new one is in, though.

Thanks Holli. Good memory.
Yep, I gots one. I purchased it over a year ago. It is not one of the sizes listed on their site today unless it is the 5x2 and I didn't pay nearly that much for it. It works just fine and gives a great edge. Be aware that Escher was a company that selected and sold the hones and is not the mine or the type of stone being mined. With that I have not heard and reports on the quality control Escher used in selecting the hones they sold. To call the hones being sold today an Escher is a stretch. I also have a vintage Escher and use that hone most of the time, more son on softer steel razors like Sheffields but it does work fine on all razors.
If the price of the Timber tool hones is within your budget it may be a good purchase. The Escher I have was thrown into a lot purchase I made at a local flea market costing ~ $35 with several straight razors. If you are patient and do a lot of hunting you may find a vintage and real Escher costing less than the Timber Tools items. In the end, you will probably want a real Escher anyway. Your call. I can't say anything to take away from the Timber TOols hone except that it is not an Escher. Similar though.“If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got.” (A. Einstein)
