    Default Hone Comparison

I'm new to honing and I'm trying to see how different these hones are in comparison. Basically, I'm either going with the standard Norton 4/8k combo stone or a diamond hone.

Now the 8k grit of the norton is fine enough to get that razor sharp edge back, but how does it compare to the DMT Dia-Sharp - Fine - 600grit Diamond Stone? The description on the diamond stone states that it is used for sharpening a regularly maintained razor. Is the grit between a regular hone and a diamond hone really different?

A norton hone with 600 grit count would remove quite a bit of material wouldn't it? So, I would think that a diamond hone with 600grit would have to be significantly different if it was just for maintaining the edge of a razor that just needs to be tuned up.

    Any thoughts?

BTW, none of the razors I own have bad edges as far as being really dull or having chips. I just need to bring the fine edge back.

    Go with Norton without thinking.
if you want to just bring shave ready edge back then go with barber hone.gl

Do you mean the 8000 DMT ? A 600 grit plate or stone is for knives or maybe heavy restoration to remove frowns or significant chips on a wedge bladed razor. Another vote for the Norton 4/8 here.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

"Fine" is a relative term - for a knife guy 600 may be fine, but that is extremely coarse for a razor. You should pay more attention to the grit numbers than the written descriptions.

To just keep a shave ready blade sharp, an 8k or finer will do the trick.

So basically, any hone with 8k grit should be good to keep my blades shave ready.

8 or higher. I would assume if yours were profesionally honed, they went higher that 8k, but 8k is certainly good enough to get good shaves off of. You may prefer something higher for minimal touchups, though.
