    Default Cracked My Naniwa

So here is the set-up, i took my cold naniwa 8000 and put it in a slightly less cool water to soak it. Heard like a pop 3 seconds later, took it out and the stone has a crack runing straight across exactly half way through the stone. so i lapped it down ant honed a razor on it and it didnt catch or anything. So my question is why did it happen? do i need to bring the stone and water to room temp before using? and will there be any problems using as is? sorry no camera so no pics.

I was looking closely at my Naniwa 8k, and I think mine may have a crack in it as well. I can't feel it, and it doesn't seem to affect honing at all. It appears as a little black line that did not come out when I lapped the hone to clear the other blackness on the surface. I'm still debating what to do about it...

my crack looks exactly like my pencil line (.38 graphite) when i lapped it but it runs down the sides and i assume all the way through. i couldnt catch it sliding my finger nail across it and like i said it didnt affect my razor in the bit.

    Yikes!!!!

    Do Not Soak These Stones!!!!

They are not meant to be soaked. Soaking them will ruin them. All you need to to is spray them with some water and hone away.

That is the first i heard this Lynn. I thought will all the water stones you were supposed to soak them before use. I dont leave it soaking all the time just put it in like 5 or 10 min before i use it. Well right there might be the problem then.

My Naniwa Chosera's came with instructions to soak for about 20 minutes but no more than 40 minutes. (These were written in Japanese on the side of the hone.)

So far no trouble with this in all the months I have used them.

The Chosera should be soaked but not left in water for an extended period as they can develop fissures. The Super Stones should not be soaked and only sprayed (or whatever method you use) with a film of water.Lynn

    Default crack

My mom spanked me so hard once she cracked my Naniwa. I guess I deserved it.

Others replied to the "Do not soak point".

With winter on us here in North America dropping a cold hone
from the garage into a bucket of hot tap water would be a blunder
as would placing a wet hone in a freezing garage.

i.e. a risk not worth taking...
