Thanked: 74Lapping a C12k
Everyone,
I used my DMT D8C to lap my C12k flat, but noticed there were visible scratch marks left in the surface afterwards. Then, I noticed my freshly lapped King 1K stone laying by the sink and figured I could just rub them together to clean up the finish on the C12k. It looks like it worked out pretty well. I haven't gotten around to trying out the stones since, but I'll get a chance this weekend for sure.
Any body else use this method of lapping?

Thanked: 2591your scratch problem could be comming from not breaking in the DMT well enough.
I know some people use the stone from the previous lower grit to lap the stone of the next grit. I am not sure how common it is because you have to be absolutely certain all stones are flat, but then why not use say a DMT to lap all?Stefan

Thanked: 1262Scratches never bothered me, because they are usually just superficial.
But yeah, like mainman said, you dmt probably needs broken int more. Which the CH12 probably just helped with....

My DMTC always left scratches on hard stones, including the C12k, barber hones, and my Dragon's Tongue. I too used another hone to remove them, but tried to stick to harder hones than a King 1k - a harder hone will wear less, so it will stay flatter. I would use a barber hone or my pocket size Spyderco Medium.

Thanked: 3164My DMT always left tiny, superficial scratches too - even though it is a couple of years old and has seen sevice nearly every other day of the week. I took to using loose 600 grit mixed to a slurry with water on a heavy glass plate to finish naturals - no more scratch pattern.
Regards,
Neil
