If you've had it for years and it is a dark/medium gray, I'm guessing that it's a Norton Crystolon combination hone, silicon carbide in a soft matrix. It's probably too coarse for razor work, but will sharpen an axe just fine. I've never cared much for the Crystolon hones as they are too soft for my druthers. If I'm sharpening a chisel, for instance, the hone has to be flat for me to be able to keep the back of the tool flat, which is an must for me.
Maybe the fine side would work for working a chip out of an abused razor. Then again, the stone would have to be flat.
