Setting Bevel With Knife Hone

Anyone ever try to set a razor bevel with the fine side of a two sided knife hone? Anyone have an idea of what the grit of the fine side would be?

There are lots of different knife hones out there that are referred to as "fine," so you'd have to be a little more specific.

It is an unknown knife hone that I've had for years. It has no markings. I was hoping to learn the fine side might be around 1000 grit.

Without pictures, or being able to use it, I don't see how we could say what grit it is. Is it a natural stone? Synthetic? We don't know anything about it to even begin to say if it would set the bevel well.

Give us more to go on

if its pone of those cheap chinese stones I would say not good.

What color is the hone and can you lap it flat and ease the corners if you choose to use it?

It's synthetic, 8X2X1. Dark grey and medium grey. It is old, how old I don't know. It was part of my father's estate. I was thinking these run of the mill kniife hones were of a standard/average grit. Guess not. Thanks for the replies.

I have a cheap Chinese knife hone that's about the colour you describe and it's 250/750 and another one that came with a gerber knife and it looks the same, it's 250/1000. Yours might be totally different, but that might give you some idea.
