Bought a old hone for $8..Help Identify
It says on the little box it came in
Font of box: Rasiermesserstein Celtes
Kunststein-FabrikC. Pickel Marburg, Austria
inside of box stuff in english and german (i assume)
It is greenish gray a rectangle and 2" or so by 5" or so. Looks like it is in good shape.
Can anyone tell me anything about it? What is it worth? About what grit is it?
Thanks

Sham's thread, BARBER hones characteristics, might prove useful for you. I don't recall one just like yours in it, but I may just not remember it. Otherwise, it could at least give you some idea of what to expect.
Nice find though for $8

it has the same logo as an "Apart" hone. A pretty decent Barber hone. You can see in this thread:

From the description it certainly sounds like a barber hone. The best way to figure out what grit is to do some touch up honing and shave testing.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 1262Looks like a barber hone. I would lap it to make sure its flat and more importantly remove all the years of crap off the surface.
I would take one of your razors and do 4 light strokes on it. With just water or lather.
Then strop and shave.

The inside box printing and hone itself look identical to my Apart; just substitute "APART" where yours says "CELTES". I'm going to guess that the hones are identical with only a name change. If the 2 brands are identical, then you have a hone that is a bit better than a Swaty, IMO. Great find!
