Default Shapton Glass Stone Hone Holder

    Hey everyone!!!
My Shapton Glass Stones should arrive any day now, but i have heard people often buy or make holders for the stones. I have seen on SRD they sell them, but it will cost me about 120USD including shipping to get one, i am doing an order from them, im getting a DMT 325 lapping stone and one of the new leather razor pouches. But im not to keen on an extra 120USD for a holder, but if they are really good i would consider it. So im after peoples opinions on stone holders, both made and brought? In a way i would rather make one.

So if anyone has any pics of home-made stone holders or advice on brought ones, i would really appreciate it

P.S. I plan to restore razors, so i will need to do lots of honing lol

    Thanks
    Marco

    Hey Marco,

The holder is really very good, it is very stable and the stones fit very precisely in it. However, there are other good options as well. To be perfectly honest, my parents made the holder that I've made my go to pic

    Best of luck!

These work great on just about everything

Amazon.com: Big Horn 19048 Water Stone Holder: Home Improvement

they are everywhere just google it...

However yes the Shapton stone holder rocks with Shapton stones, it really holds the stone and doesn't move, you also don't have to keep loosening and tightening the stones... You don't have to buy it for about 2500 razors though, at that point in time, you will be getting close on some of the stones to being too thin to use that cheap stone holder anymore...

I use that rubber webbed shelf stuff like Lynn uses in his DVD on a folded paper towel on my counter top. For my DMT I've got one of these $15.00 jobs seen here and it works well enough.

I have a Shapton stone holder and really like it. It is very heavy and stable and it holds the stone higher off the table/counter than the alternatives. I also set my 8x3 coticules in it and set some smaller finishers on it.

Glen and Jimmy hone way, way, way more than I do (I only maintain my own razors) so, clearly, what they are using works perfectly well or they wouldn't use it. On the other hand, I don't think anyone is saying that the Shapton is bad, per se. In fact, it's a really nice tool. It's just that it's probably not the most economically justifiable alternative for you. It was worth it to me, but ymmv.

    Thanks for the replies!!!

I just saw on SRD, there is a DMT non skid mat for $6.50!!! I think im gonna get one of those and see how it goes! Its just 6.50, and im already placing an order so its all cool . If i find i need one, i should be able to either make one from wood, or buy one. Or even mount the non-skid pad on a few layers of nice hard wood .

    Thanks guys!!!!!!!!!

In the grocery store or maybe a good hardware that has household items ask about the rubber shelf liner seen here .

    Thanks for the replies .

Im going to try make one from wood and screws. It will be sort of like those fold able worktops where the bench area can act as a sort of clamp, and its on screws. Ill look around the garage tomorrow for some inspiration lol. The worst thing that could happen is i cant make something and i have to buy it, but ill make a plan

Another cheap alternative is the Bench Cookie:

Rockler Bench Cookies: Lift, Grip and Protect! - Rockler Woodworking Tools

I have used these and the hones hold well on them.

    Have fun,

    Lynn
