Eschers and Thuringians
Just found this place claiming to sell new Escher hones and similar Thuringians. They sell the "other" Thuringian in a decent size for only $50. Pretty tempting. Anyone have any experience with these? How similar would this other Thuringian be to an Escher?

Dude, be careful. you've gone HAD Happy. I know, I have done the same thing. I saw this site awhile back myself claiming stone to come from E.Germany. I'll let the SRP pros answer I don't want to get in trouble.

they are not eschers . You cannot compare them. they will put edge approximately 10k or 12k level.
hope this helps.

I've seen and used the one in Jimmy's second link.
Escher is/was a brand name, Thurngian is the type of stone. Unless a Thurry was sold by Escher, it is not an Escher.

it's true, modine hones feel like this mysterious, geological shangri-la. and when they have those wicked-cool kanji? I just melt. and you gotta love the timelessness of them, and that its just a flat rock. anyways, I find the claim that they come from the same stone as the Eschers quite intriguing. would be surprising if it were a lie, but not *that* surprising if it were a fudge. I also wonder about the differences between the two he has - if the pseudo-Eschers are really 1.5X as good as the "plain" Thuringians. but thanks for the thoughts, guys - and the links, Jimmy.

after reading thoroughly through those threads, I'm still left feeling a little unclear how good these NOS stones are - though it seems the cheaper "Thuringian" is indeed inferior ("you get what you pay for'). I also wonder if the guy changed the language on the site - I dont see what the fuss is about as far as his misleading people. He is not claiming he has "Eschers," he is claiming he has a hunk of stone from the same place. Now, that might be a lie, but certainly seems plausible - one big hunk of stone can make a lot of hones, and isnt going to GO anywhere no matter how many decades pass.

I think we all agree with you, that's why we do this. I would rather look at some of these natural stones, than precious gems. In fact I have heard that many of the "Old" Eschers have been snapped up by gem cutters and polishers. I am fortunate to have an SRP mentor I can go visit periodically on my lunch break. It's a learning experience to say the least.
Keep doing research and keep us appraised of your findings.

The hones advertised are MST hones, they are like the vintage, little, light grey hones that you come across occasionally on ebay.
They are originally from here: 0riginal
