Hone identification
I have a hone that is blond on one side and dark blue on the other. The blond side is softer than the blue side. Any idea which side is the coarsest? I believe it is the blond softer side but I am not sure. I can't tell the difference by the scratches under the scope.

Thanked: 1371Nice coti/bbw!
To learn how to use it to it's full potential:
Go to Bart's website here: Welcome to Coticule.be - home of the famous Belgian Coticule Whetstone
Click on the "coticule sharpening academy" link. Read everything there, especially the unicot, dilucot, and progressive methods.
You can find a slurry stone for it in the classifieds.

I've got a couple like that. Oddly enough back in the days when they glued the bbw to the yellow as a backing they didn't value the bbw as a honing surface. In fact I've got a couple of labeled hones (Old Rock and Deep Rock) that are yellow/bbw with the label completely covering the bbw. Old barbers that I bought coticules from in Newark, NJ back in the eighties told me the yellow side was the sharpening side and the bbw was just to reinforce the yellow. BTW, they didn't use slurry, only lather from their Lather King machines as a honing vehicle.

OK Jimmy, I'll send it right on. It's taking up too much space here anyway.

That is a sweet looking coticule Mackie and I bet you'll get some smooth shaves out of razors finished on it. When I use one of those I set a bevel with a synthetic and then do a the bbw side with slurry until I feel it is real sharp and then finish on the yellow with water only. Usually real close and smooth for me with that method.
