Default First hone on the way.....

I have just ordered My first hone from NEW! Belgian razor hones. Its the one that can be found at the bottom of the page, the cheap one.
I have had to purchse a hone as I feel my razor is dulling, I blame this on my stropping, I clearly need more practice.
I have honed many tools and knives in the past to a good edge although mostly on coarser stones. I`m quite lookingforward to honing!

    Yes it should....

For a touch up you should not need a lot of
    strokes.

To start use it like a barber hone, a little bit of lather
or just clear water and six strokes perhaps eight. Strop,
shave test. Increase the number of strokes as needed.

The fifty strokes that they mention is to remove
scratches from a previous hone. You might find
that fifty is needed but since it was already polished
and all you want is a refresh -- less may be fine.

    BigIan,

    I find honing most restful

It is also most satisfying being able to keep your edges going !

    Have fun !

    Best regards

It just arrived, I have lapped it on some sand paper.

I lapped it untill the marks left on the hone were even throughout, thinking that this should mean that 100% of the hone surface is in contact with the paper and so no high/low spots. Was this correct?

I`m about to try and start honing my razor, wish me luck.

    That was easy.....
I added some tape to the spine to reduce hone wear, don`t know if it makes much diffrence at such a low grit but......

just stropped it and it was silent on the strop. i had the strop laid flat on the table and just ran the razor along for 10 passes and it was silent, normally i get a slight zing noise, is that good or bad?

    Off for the final test.....

    Congrats!

Its very satisfying when you successfully hone a razor..! Now you're hooked, let the HAD begin..! Hehe!

Just remember to keep your pressure very light and less strokes are better. The whole "tape/dont tape" debate is one that will never be over. There are reasons for and against it, and both sides of the debate have equal merit.

I guess it just comes down to personal preference. I do tape the spine, basically to avoid spine wear (I dont like the look of it), to keep the bevel small and because it feels like it makes the razor torque towards the edge slightly and makes it easier to keep the edge on the hone. It also makes the strokes feel smoother, to me at least anyway. YMMV of course!

I'm glad it went well and heres to many more honings!
