    Cool Black surgical stone?

    I seen a "Arkansas black surgical stone" on e-bay.any one ever use one of thoes rocks? any good as a fininshing rock?

    Hi Dean,

    Black Arkansas stones generally work well as finishing stones. They work best when they have been "broken in" so that the initial finish has been smoothed out. They are slow cutters, meaning that they remove very little metal on each pass. That means that your razor really needs to be at the finishing-stone stage, unless you have a lot of patience. :-)

    I had one forty years ago that I bought to use with pocket knives. Slow isn't an adequate adjective to describe that particular stone. The naniwa 12k would be a far better choice IME and so would the chinese 12k if you really like slow.
    Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
