    Default Newbie hone set

Witch of the two would have the better shave out of a Shapton glass set 4k 8k 16k and a naniwa 5k 8k 12k. Just wondering as I'm about to make a purchase and can't figure out witch to buy

    Spud,

    The 3, 5, 10 or 3, 8, 12 Naniwas work well as a progression.

I haven't had any experience with the Shaptons, but would like to try the 16k

    Have fun !

    Best regards

In my experience, you can straight from the Naniwa 3k to the Naniwa 12k. It's all a matter of preparing the stone to cut aggressively at first and smoothing out during the honing.

I had the exact same debate when I got my hones. I ended up going for the Shaptons, not for any other reason than I liked the symmetry of going 4-8-16 as I went up the grits. I also have the 1k as a bevel setter. I can get really great, smooth edges from these stones and they are great to use.

But now I want to get the Naniwa's, and a few more naturals as well. Really just experimenting to see what gives me the smoothest edges..! Thats my excuse anyway, and if it justify's my HAD then great..!

Either set will do the job just fine. I prefer the naniwa super stones but the shaptons are great too. In either case if it was me I would throw a 1k into the mix for bevel setting if it is necessary. Many times it is.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I've tried Naniwa (chosera) and Shapton. Either would give you an equally good shave. It's just a matter of picking one, and learning how to use 'em well.

    Smile Does...

Does one set the bevel with a 1000 grit stone, and then work your way up to 8000 grit or so, and then finish with a strop? if you went up to a 12000 grit stone would you use a strop afterwards? And does the strop need to be used with leather side second and canvas side first, or vice versa?

Take a look at Straight Razor Place Wiki:Books/Beginners Guide - Straight Razor Place Wiki
I find stropping beneficial no matter what hone I use last. And the leather is the last thing that the edge rubs against before cutting my whiskers.
